Three-time national award-winning actor, Padmashri Mohanlal, is one of the most versatile and accomplished artistes in the Malayalam film industry and in Indian cinema. A commerce graduate, he started his acting career 27 years ago as a villain in the film 'Manjil Virinja Pookkal' and has so far acted in more than 270 films, where he gave a series of outstanding performances which remain firmly etched in the collective memory of cinemagoers. One of the most acclaimed actors of Indian cinema, Mohanlal has won the Government of Kerala's Award for the Best Actor six times.

Among his many films, Vaanaprastham, where he donned the role of Kunjikuttan, a Kathakali artiste stands out. The film, which was produced by him, was a turning point in Mohanlal's acting career. It won both national and international acclaim. The seasoned actor who does not have a theatre background debuted on the stage in 2001 as Karna in Karnabharam, a Sanskrit play directed by Kavalam Narayana Panikkar, that depicts the inner turmoil of Karna a day before the Kurukshetra war.

Another landmark in his acting career was Kadhayattam, where he depicted 10 unforgettable characters from Malayalam literature. A fusion of stage acting, movie expression, sound and lighting techniques and music, the presentation was his offering to his mother tongue. Chayamukhi is Mohanlal's latest play under the banner 'Kalidasa Visual Magic' - a production house promoted jointly by Mohanlal and well-known Malayalam actor Mukesh. Apart from producing and distributing films, Mohanlal has also launched a Film Post Production Studio and College for Dubbing Artists at the Kinfra Film and Video Park, Kazhakoottam, Trivandrum.

His recent foray into the field of animation takes the form of Vismaya Max, an animation school. He is also involved in several business activities including Food Processing, Restaurants, Tourism, Plantation and Exports. An avid collector of paintings and antiques, Mr. Mohanlal has a private art gallery at his home. A native of Trivandrum, he is married to Suchitra, daughter of veteran Tamil actor-producer K. Balaji. The couple has two children, Pranav and Vismaya. Mr. Mohanlal is currently settled in Cochin.
